What's New
Compliance Deadline for the New Architectural Woodwork Standards is Here

As of October 1, 2009, all QCP participants are required to comply with the Architectural Woodwork Standards (AWS) on all projects referencing the AWS in the specifications and/or the contract documents.

On projects bid after October 1, and for which the specification references the latest (or current) edition of the AWI Quality Standards Illustrated (QSI), please verify with the design professional as to which standard shall apply: The AWS, Edition 1 or the QSI, 8th Edition, Version 2.0.

Plant inspections for applicants and biennial inspections for participants will be inspected as follows:

  1. Companies for which inspections have already been scheduled and will be completed by or before December 31, 2009 may choose which Standard will be used during the inspection.
  2. Companies for which inspections will occur after January 1, 2010 will be inspected using the AWS, Edition 1.

Questions concerning this policy may be directed to AWI QCC Program Director Craig Elias at celias@awiqcp.org

Architectural Woodwork Standards Includes New Requirement for Submittals and Shop Drawings

Section No. 1 of the Architectural Woodwork Standards (AWS) sets minimal requirements for shop drawings and submittals. Effective October 1, all Q-accredited woodworkers and applicants are required to comply with this new standard.

In order to assist you in meeting these new requirements, click here to download sample shop drawings from our Web site. Click here to download a .pdf of the entire Submittals section of the AWS.

Questions concerning this policy may be directed to AWI QCC Program Director Craig Elias at celias@awiqcp.org

Annual Renewal Period Began November 1

AWI QCC staff distributed renewal invoices to all currently accredited participants on Nov. 1. According to Q Program Policies, all current participants are required to renew their accreditation annually. The renewal process involves two steps:

  1. Payment of renewal fees (see fee schedule below.)
  2. Completion (signature and date) of the AWI QCC Code of Ethics form.

Both of the above are due by 11:59 PM EST Dec. 31, 2009. Companies that submit after this date will be charged a $300 late fee.

Those who have not yet been Q-accredited for one full year are also required to renew; however, their renewal fee will be pro-rated according to their date of application to the program.

Renewal Fees
The annual renewal fee for AWI members is $1,100 and the fee for non-AWI members is $2,500. Firms that submit after Dec. 31 will incur a late fee as noted above, so be sure to renew early to avoid additional costs.

Q-Policies and By-Laws Revised; Effective November 1

The Q-program Policies and By-laws have been modified for consistency with the new Architectural Woodwork Standards (AWS). Effective November 1, all Q-accredited firms and applicants are required to abide by the new version of the policies, which was also reformatted for easier reading. Click here to download the updated version of the QCC Policies.

AWI QCC to Release New Project Certification Seal

Seal will uniquely identify Q-certified projects
In order to avoid confusion caused when the Q logo is used for a non-Q-certified job, the AWI QCC will soon distribute a new project certification seal to Q-accredited woodworkers. The seal will be distributed upon payment for project labels and/or certificates of compliance. It will include the Q-logo, the project name and number, and the Q-accredited company's name.

Q-Representative Wayne Hintz Promoted to AWI QCC Inspections Manager

Former Q-representative Wayne Hintz has joined the AWI QCC staff as Inspections Manager. In this new role, all Q-representatives submit their project inspection reports to Wayne, who will be responsible for the overall quality of the reports, as well as following up with the applicable project entities.

"The growth of the program created a need for someone to manage inspections -- particularly those with deficiencies -- and for someone to be in constant communication with project architects and woodworkers," said AWI QCC Program Director Craig Elias. "We look forward to Wayne's oversight of these vital functions, which will boost the visibility and credibility of the Q among the construction community."

Wayne is a 25-year architectural woodwork veteran. Prior to becoming a Q-representative in July 2005, Wayne served in various industry positions, including lead cabinetmaker, installer, estimator, purchasing agent, project manager and designer/drafter. He has experience in high-profile museum, government and business exhibit projects at venues such as The Smithsonian Institution and the National Archives.
AWI QCC Web Site has New Look and New Feature

The AWI QCC Web site has been redesigned in conjunction with new marketing efforts. The revamped site prominently features the Q-brand, and is more intuitive and easier to navigate. It also offers users the ability to view the total number of QCP projects completed by each woodworking firm. This information is displayed along with the participants' other information, such as contact and scope of accreditation, under "Find Q Firms." Check it out now at www.awiqcp.org.
Fall Issue of Design Solutions Features QCP Projects

The fall issue of Design Solutions magazine, the official journal of AWI, showcases the following QCP projects:

  • Raleigh Convention Center, Stephenson Millwork
  • Skagit Valley Hospital, Westmark Products
  • Mandan Middle School, TMI Systems Design
  • Worchester Trial Court, Ebenisterie Beaubois
  • Oregon Convention Center, Nikolai Manufacturing

Each article contains detailed information on the project woodworker, architect and owner, along with several pictures.

"Design Solutions is a great way to showcase your talents to more than 20,000 architects," said Phil Duvic, editor-in-chief of Design Solutions and executive vice president of AWI.

The View from Here
by Shows Leary, Q-representative and AWI QCC Director

I have been involved with the Q since 1996, when former AWI President Leo Biagiotti asked me to come on board as a Representative. Since that time, I have served on every level possible, as Representative, Board member, Board of Appeals member, as well as on several committees. I also spearheaded various initiatives designed to streamline the program and the inspection process.

Over the years, I have met hundreds of woodworking professionals. In doing so, I am constantly overwhelmed by the interest most firms have in the success of the program. I receive positive recommendations and insight from woodworkers on a daily basis, and I always apply this input when making decisions and recommendations for the program. I can also say with great confidence that the entire AWI QCC team is sincerely interested in promoting architectural woodwork as a vital part of the design and construction communities.

I am confident that the Q will continue to make its mark and increase the credibility and visibility of architectural woodwork throughout the construction industry.

Rep. Spotlight
Joe Sorrelli

Joe is the Q-representative responsible for conducting inspections in the New York City area and parts of Florida. He has more than 45 years of woodwork industry experience, ranging from apprentice to business owner. Joe was one of the first Representatives to conduct QCP inspections in 1996. In 2005, he again joined the ranks of the Q-representatives. He has been actively involved with AWI since 1979. Since then, Joe has delivered numerous presentations to woodworkers on estimating, project management, drafting and billing. He also delivers presentations on the Q and the new Architectural Woodwork Standards (AWS) to design professionals nationwide. Joe served as AWI President from 1993-1994. He resides in Brooklyn with his wife Alice.

Comings and Goings

The AWI QCC bids farewell and offers immense gratitude to Q-representative Ernest Perez, who has chosen to retire. Ernest joined the AWI QCC as a Q-representative in 1996. Upon graduating from high school, Ernest went to work for Terrill Manufacturing in San Angelo, Texas, where he worked his way up to Vice President of Sales before retiring from the firm in 1996.

The AWI QCC also wishes to thank Lauren Duvic for her help over the summer. Lauren has returned to Northern Virginia Community College to pursue a double major in Fine Arts and Social Science Teaching.
